Prices and booking
How much does a guided Kenai River fishing trip cost?
$300 per person for a full day of about 7 hours, or $250 per person for a 3/4 day of about 5 hours. All gear is included. Prices don't include sales tax.
How much does a guided Kasilof River trip cost?
Every Kasilof trip is a drift-boat float, and a good part of it runs through the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. Each trip is $300 per person: a full day of about 7 hours, with all gear included. There is no 3/4-day trip on the Kasilof.
How much are your bear viewing fly-outs?
$650 per person to Big River Lakes and $750 per person to Crescent Lake. Our early-season Chinitna Bay trip is $550 per person, booked by phone.
Do you offer a discount for booking more than one trip?
Yes. Book two or more of our trips and you get 5% off all of them, bear fly-outs and Homer halibut included.
How do I book?
Book any single trip online on its page. For two or more trips, send us the package request form, call (907) 268-2925 or email info@kenaisportfishing.com, and we will build the days around the best fishing for your dates.
Why does my booking say Alaska Boat Rental & Guide Service?
Alaska Boat Rental & Guide Service is our parent company, and our online booking runs through it. Your confirmation email shows the logos of all our companies, Kenai Sportfishing included. It is the same company and the same team.
What is your cancellation policy?
One policy covers every trip. If you cancel more than 30 days before your trip, we refund your payment less a 20% fee. Within 30 days of the trip, it is non-refundable. If we cancel for weather, a mechanical problem, safety or the plane, you get a full refund or we reschedule you. If a fishing regulation changes, we may need to change the trip; and on a halibut day, the weather sometimes means a shorter trip in protected water, in which case we refund the difference.
Getting to your trip
Where do your trips start?
You drive to each trip, so it works wherever you are staying: an RV, a hotel or a rental. Kenai River salmon trips meet at the Pillars Boat Launch on Silver Salmon Drive, off the Kenai Spur Highway between Soldotna and Kenai. Kasilof River trips meet at the Kasilof State Recreation Area, about 10 miles south of Soldotna. Bear fly-outs leave from the Kenai Airport float plane basin. Homer halibut trips meet at the Homer Harbor boat launch on the Homer Spit.
What time do trips start?
River trips start early in the morning, and the Kenai 3/4-day trip also runs in the afternoon. Bear fly-outs depart at 7:00, 8:30, 10:00 AM and 12:00, 1:30, 3:00 PM. Homer halibut meeting time: Generally 6:30 AM; from about Labor Day weekend it moves gradually later as September mornings get dark; we confirm your time. Your booking confirmation gives your exact time and meeting place.
Is there parking at the boat launches?
Yes. The Pillars Boat Launch and the Kasilof State Recreation Area both have parking with a daily fee. Pay it when you park, then walk down to the docks to meet your guide.
Do you offer lodging?
No. We run the fishing and bear trips, and most of our guests stay in their own RV, a campground, a hotel or a rental in Soldotna or Kenai. Our meeting points are all a short drive from town.
On the river
What is included on a guided river trip?
The boat and your guide, rods and reels, waders and boots, bait, flies and tackle, and filleting of your catch.
What should I bring?
Your fishing license; layered clothing with a waterproof shell, plus a hat and gloves; food, drinks and water; sunscreen, bug spray and polarized sunglasses; and your phone or camera. Alcohol is fine, but please no hard alcohol or glass.
How many people fit in one boat?
River regulations allow up to 5 guests in a boat. We have enough boats and guides to take very large groups out together.
Do I need fishing experience?
No. Your guide provides all the gear and shows you how to fish. We guide first-timers, families and experienced anglers.
Can I fish the Kenai River without a guide?
Yes, for some salmon, especially sockeye, and there are many public spots. We suggest a day with a guide early in your trip to learn the rod setup, the leaders and where to fish. After that, most anglers do well on their own.
Do you process and ship fish?
Yes. For guests who fish with us, we process, freeze and ship fish for $3.49 a pound. Checking your fish on the plane in an airline-approved box usually costs less than shipping.
Do you tip fishing guides in Alaska?
A tip is always appreciated and never required. If you'd like to tip, 15% to 25% is usual.
Licenses and fish
Do I need a fishing license?
Yes, if you are 16 or older. You can buy an Alaska sport fishing license online from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and show it on your phone, or buy one at stores across Alaska.
Can I fish for king salmon?
King salmon are in trouble around the world, and Alaska hasn't been spared. Most rivers across the state are closed to kings each year as the season approaches, because returns are projected to stay low, and we don't expect that to change soon. When we can fish for kings, we do; when we can't, we target sockeye and the other species in season. Kenai River kings have been closed to fishing for many years. Kasilof kings are open most years: when the Alaska Department of Fish and Game opens the fishery, we run Kasilof king trips by drift boat, early in the season. Check ADF&G's emergency orders before you go.
When is the best time to fish the Kenai River?
For sockeye, late July: over the last 10 counted seasons the peak week has been Jul 23 to Jul 29. For silvers, the early run from August 1 to August 31 and the late run from September 1 to September 30. For rainbow trout, mid-August to October 1. See our Kenai River run timing page for every run.
Bear fly-outs
Where do the bear viewing flights leave from?
From the Kenai Airport float plane basin, a short drive from Soldotna.
How long is a bear viewing fly-out?
Big River Lakes and Crescent Lake trips take about 6 hours, with about 4 hours on the lake.
Are the bear trips safe for kids?
Most kids do fine. On Big River Lakes and Crescent Lake trips you stay in our boat the whole time, and you only need to be able to climb in and out of the plane and the boat; we help anyone who needs it. Infants and toddlers have come along many times, though we don't necessarily recommend it; that is the parents' call. These are remote trips, 30 minutes or more by plane from a hospital, and all our guides are trained in first aid and CPR.
Is food provided on the bear trips?
No. Please bring your own food, water and snacks. There are no restrooms at the lakes, so use the restroom before the flight.
Do you fly to Brooks Falls?
Not in 2027. Interested in Brooks Falls? Call (907) 268-2925.
