Kasilof River Rainbow Trout & Steelhead Fishing With Kenai Sportfishing

At Kenai Sportfishing, we specialize in fishing adventures throughout the Kenai Peninsula and Alaska’s remote backcountry. Our fall Kasilof River rainbow trout and steelhead fishing begins mid-August, and is an absolute fall favorite.

The Kasilof River is renowned for its diverse and abundant fishery, featuring impressive runs of sockeye, king, and silver salmon, along with a notable rainbow trout and steelhead fishery. One of the things that make this such an exciting fishery is the ability to enjoy using all types of different techniques.

From the boat we can use spin-n-glo’s and kwikfish enhanced with baits and scents. We can step out of the boat and use spinning gear and spinners such as pixie spoons or rooster tails. And we can use fly or spey rods using beads, flesh flies, or a host of other lures.

The Kasilof River offers the potential for multiple catches in a day, with many fish being post-spawn heading back to the ocean, interspersed with fresh fish arriving to spawn. This river provides an excellent opportunity for beginner fly anglers to catch steelhead, thanks to its defined runs and easy wading conditions early in the season. The combination of diverse fish species and accessible fishing techniques makes the Kasilof River one of our favorite destinations for our guests.

About Kasilof River Rainbow Trout

The Kasilof River, spanning over 18 miles with a diverse range of terrain, is a premier destination for trout fishing. In addition to it’s salmon runs, it is also known for its abundant Rainbow Trout, Dolly Varden, and Steelhead. This makes it one of the most exceptional trout fishing locations not just in Alaska, but just about anywhere. The river’s clear, nutrient-rich waters, combined with its clean habitat, create an ideal environment for trout. These conditions are further enhanced by the millions of salmon that return to the river each summer, providing a rich and varied food base for the trout.

Rainbow trout in the Kasilof River have a spawning season from late March to early June. They have a carnivorous diet, feeding primarily on fish, salmon carcasses, and eggs. The average lifespan of these trout ranges from 4 to 11 years, with their size varying from 10 to 30+ inches, though most are found within the 15 to 25-inch range.

The fall season, particularly from mid to late August, is a particularly popular and productive time for Kasilof River rainbow trout and steelhead fishing. This period coincides with the spawning of millions of red salmon, leading to an abundance of food in the form of loose eggs and later, decomposing salmon flesh. This abundance of food causes the trout, especially the larger ones, to aggressively feed and rapidly gain weight, making it an excellent time for anglers to target these fish.
