The Kenai River Sockeye Salmon Run begins on July 1st. It’s important to note that there is a run of sockeye salmon that transits the Kenai River in late May and June. The May and June sockeye salmon are primarily heading for the Russian River to spawn. These fish are denoted as Russian River Sockeye Salmon Early Run. This run peaks at around 3,000 fish daily. This makes them challenging to catch on the lower part of the Kenai River because the lower river is so big. Sockeye fishing in the Kenai River becomes very good when the counts exceed 25,000 fish.
As July 1st approaches, the Kenai River sockeye salmon run gradually increases throughout the month. It typically reaches 25,000 fish per day around July 17th, though this date can vary slightly. July 17th is when we can anticipate the fishing to improve significantly for sockeye salmon on the Kenai River. On its peak day, these runs can easily exceed 100,000 new sockeye salmon entering the Kenai River!

Kenai River Sockeye Salmon Escapments
The Kenai River sockeye salmon run boasts incredible health. The red line represents the 3-year average of 2021, 2022, and 2023. This run’s minimum escapement goals are 900,000 fish, typically achieved around August 1st each year.
Some of the Kenai River sockeye run’s success results from the closure of the Kenai River King Salmon fishery. Whenever restrictions are imposed on the Kenai River king salmon sport fishery, additional regulations typically apply. These additional restrictions often affect the strategically positioned commercial fishing nets near the shoreline entrances to the Kenai River.. Alaska Department of Fish and Game restricts the sockeye fishery to prevent accidental king salmon catch in the nets. These restrictions allow significantly more sockeye salmon to pass through.
Once the minimum escapement goals have been met, or when there is compelling evidence that the goals will eventually be exceeded, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game often raises the daily fish limits from 3 per person per day to 6 per person per day.
Around the August 1st timeframe, the river often sees the daily entry of 100,000 new fish. When this occurs, it typically takes only a couple of days to surpass the optimum escapement goal of 1.1 million sockeye.
On average, almost 2 million Kenai River sockeye salmon successfully make it to their spawning grounds each year. This creates a highly sustainable and healthy fishery.
