On The Kenai Peninsula, fall reigns supreme with its unmatched vibrancy and beauty. Fall season sets itself apart with its fiery tapestry of colors and the energetic last salmon runs. It ignites feeding frenzies among trout, char, and grayling. When the first Kenai River silver salmon are caught in late July, we know the end of summer is near. Kenai River silver salmon fish counts are the best tool for determining the best Kenai River silver salmon fishing dates. Make sure to check out on page on how to fish for silver salmon.
Known for their spirited response to baits and lures, these fighters, off an exhilarating challenge. They are the last of the year’s pacific salmon species to spawn, and bring with them fierce strikes and acrobatic displays.
Kenai River Silver Salmon Fish Counts Early & Late Run
Before diving in, it’s important to clarify that Kenai River silver salmon are not counted on the Kenai River. There is no sonar to count silver slamon the way king salmon and sockeye salmon are counted. The fall arrival of silver salmon significantly overlaps, with the influx of hundreds of thousands of sockeye salmon. This overlap lasts for approximately 3 weeks. It is not possible to distinguish the difference between sockeye salmon and silver salmon simply through the use of Sonar.
So the graph provided here is simply our “best guess.” This is based on many years’ experience fishing daily for silver salmon as to what we think the run looks like. Intentionally there is no daily numbers provided. Instead, the purpose is to communicate what we think the basic shape of the run looks like.
Kenai River silver Salmon Escapments
This will be a short section because if we don’t know what the daily fish counts are! We also don’t know what the escapements each year are!
Limits for sockeye salmon are 2 per person per day in August. The limit becomes becomes 3 per person per day starting September 1. It’s important to note that this limit “is in combination” with sockeye salmon.
So if the limit for sockeye is 3 per person per day then you can have up to 3 fish but no more than 2 can be silver salmon. In September you can have a total of 3 fish but no more than 3 can be silver salmon.
One regulation change that happens pretty regularly is in the increase in limits of sockeye salmon. It is not uncommon for the limit of sockeye salmon to become 6 per person per day. When this happens the limit for silver salmon stays the same. So, if the limit were raised by Alaska Department of Fish and Game to 6 salmon per day, then in August the limit would still be no more than 2 silver salmon and in September the limit would be nor more than 3 silver salmon.
Fish counts and escapements are, unfortunately, not feasible or practical for silver salmon. However, empirical evidence suggests both the Kenai River silver salmon early run and the Kenai River silver salmon late run are both very healthy fisheries. Fantastic fall colors, lack of crowds, and some brilliant, strong fish, make fall an excellent time on the peninsula. Kenai River silver salmon fishing is one of our favorite times of year to be fishing.
