Nestled in Alaska’s lower Kenai Peninsula, Deep Creek is famous for its superb halibut and king salmon fishing, drawing anglers worldwide. Its abundant fish population and easy water access enhance its appeal. The Deep Creek King Salmon Fish Counts are pivotal in identifying optimal times for targeting king salmon. Additionally, Deep Creek features a unique “tractor launch” for halibut boats into Cook Inlet and is known for its strong river flow and annual return of king salmon.
Winding through dense forests and salt marshes, Deep Creek in Alaska offers a serene fishing environment with wooded hillsides. It serves as a habitat for various fish species, including King (Chinook), Silver (Coho), and Pink Salmon, plus Dolly Varden and Steelhead. Chinook salmon return to the creek in June and July, while Coho salmon come back in August and September, thus extending the fishing season.
Deep Creek State Recreation Area in Cook Inlet offers more than just fishing, including ATV riding, camping, clam digging, and picnicking. The area’s natural beauty is complemented by diverse wildlife, featuring bald eagles year-round and the arrival of sandhill cranes and other shorebirds in its saltwater marsh each May.

Deep Creek, Alaska, is a notable fishing destination located on the Kenai Peninsula in Southcentral Alaska. It lies near the town of Ninilchik, approximately 188 miles south of Anchorage and 40 miles north of Homer. The creek flows into Cook Inlet, known for its dramatic tidal fluctuations and rich marine ecosystem.
Deep Creek’s relevance lies in its status as a prime fishing spot, particularly famed for its runs of king (Chinook) salmon, as well as silver (Coho) and pink salmon. Deep Creek King Salmon Fish Counts
Deep creek does not necessarily have monitoring each year. The king salmon stock assessments have been done through a combination of means including aerial surveys, weirs and sonar.
The Deep Creek king salmon fish counts have not been monitored in 2022 and 2023 so we though we would simply include the fish counts for the most recent 3 years that the Deep Creek king salmon fishery were counted which were 2018, 2019, 2020
The Deep Creek king salmon run starts in late May with the season kicking off on Memorial Day weekend. The run will continue through the majority of July.
Most of the fishing takes place in the lower part of the river below the Sterling Highway Bridge.
Additionally, the run can change dramatically between consecutive days so there is a great deal of luck when it comes to being at Deep Creek and fishing on just the right day. The great news is that there are a large number of other things to do in the area such as surf casting for halibut, beach combing, checking out the bald eagles, or even just wandering around looking for moose. The area has an incredibly high concentration of Moose.
Deep creek King Salmon Escapements
Like many rivers throughout the world, and Alaska, king salmon stocks are in serious distress. Deep Creek king salmon stocks have not been spared from this distress.
In 2022, Deep Creek closed entirely for king salmon fishing, contrasting with other major rivers in the region. By 2023, nearly all Kenai Peninsula rivers flowing into Cook Inlet, including Kenai, Anchor, Ninilchik, and Deep Creek, shut down for both fishing and retaining king salmon. The exception was the Kasilof River, saved by its king salmon hatchery. Regulations mandated that any wild king salmon, identifiable by an adipose fin, had to be released.
There are no minimum, optimum, or maximum escapement goals set by Alaska Department of Fish and Game for the Deep Creek king salmon fishery.
The Anchor River, Ninilchik River, and Deep Creek are typically managed in unison, meaning restrictions applied to one often affect all. Therefore, checking fishing regulations for open fishing days, particularly for king salmon, is crucial. It’s equally vital to stay informed about any in-season emergency orders from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
