About Kenai River Rainbow Trout

The Kenai River, spanning over 82 miles with a diverse range of terrain, is a premier destination for trout fishing. In addition to it’s salmon runs, it is also known for its abundant Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden. This makes it one of the most exceptional trout fishing locations not just in Alaska, but just about anywhere. The river’s clear, nutrient-rich waters, combined with its clean habitat, create an ideal environment for trout. These conditions are further enhanced by the millions of salmon that return to the river each summer, providing a rich and varied food base for the trout.

Rainbow trout in the Kenai River have a spawning season from late March to early June. They have a carnivorous diet, feeding primarily on fish, salmon carcasses, and eggs. The average lifespan of these trout ranges from 4 to 11 years, with their size varying from 10 to 30+ inches, though most are found within the 15 to 25-inch range.

The fall season, particularly from mid to late August, is a particularly popular and productive time for Kenai River rainbow trout fishing. This period coincides with the spawning of millions of red salmon, leading to an abundance of food in the form of loose eggs and later, decomposing salmon flesh. This abundance of food causes the trout, especially the larger ones, to aggressively feed and rapidly gain weight, making it an excellent time for anglers to target these fish.

Kenai River Rainbow Trout Fishing: Incredible Fish Density

The Alaska Department of Fish & Game’s research indicates significant spawning activity of fish in the Kenai River, particularly around the middle river with densities up to 1,000 fish per mile. We should probably repeat that – 1,000 fish per mile!

Each year, approximately 43,000 rainbow/steelhead trout are caught by anglers, with 95% of them being released back into the river.

Our favorite area for Kenai River rainbow trout fishing is from the Moose River confluence up to Skilak Lake. Additionally, the upper Kenai River has great rainbow trout fishing as well. The area just below Skilak Lake is known for the highest fish densities. However, rainbow trout are often found in high numbers in the lower river during summer and fall. This is attributed to the availability of salmon carcasses as a food source.

The area below Skilak Lake and above the Killey River is an area we absolutely love to fish and use our powerboats to make multiple passes through this stretch of river. The Killey River pushes a lot of mud and sediment into the Kenai River and the water levels get murkier the further downriver you get. Since trout fishing is largely based on beads and flesh flies the clear water really helps the fishing and we get enormous strikes!
