Kasilof River Silver Salmon Fishing Charter
Silver Salmon Fishing On The Kenai's Little Brother
The Kasilof River, much like its more famous counterpart, the Kenai River, boasts an exceptional silver salmon fishery, especially notable in the fall. The peak of the silver salmon run in the Kasilof typically occurs in the second or third week of August each year. However, anglers can start pursuing these fish as early as August 1st. Interestingly, the initial catches of silver salmon often coincide with the tail end of the sockeye salmon season.
In terms of fishing techniques, targeting silver salmon on the Kasilof is similar to king salmon fishing. We often use kwikfish lures wrapped with sardine or spin-n-glo setups baited with eggs. This approach involves anchoring the boat and casting the lure downstream, allowing it to flow with the current. A jet diver is often used to ensure the lure reaches the lower depths of the river, which is where the silver salmon are typically found.
One of the appealing aspects of fishing for silver salmon is their aggressiveness towards lures, a stark contrast to the more lure-shy sockeye salmon. This characteristic makes them an exciting target for anglers using spinning rods and reels. Fishing in slower-moving waters where the salmon hold, using lures such as rooster tails and spinners, offers an engaging and active fishing experience. The willingness of silver salmon to strike at lures makes them a favorite among both novice and experienced anglers looking for an interactive fishing experience on the Kasilof River.

Kasilof River Silver Salmon Run Timing
Success in Alaska’s silver salmon fishing, hinges largely on timing. Unlike the more quantifiable fish counts available for king and sockeye salmon, silver salmon are not counted on our rivers for a variety of reasons.
However, these fish are well studied and it’s known that silver salmon runs, similar to king salmon, occur in two phases: a first run beginning in late July to early August and a later run starting in late August, continuing through October, with peak fishing in mid to late September.
Interestingly, the initial catches of the season often happen incidentally while anglers target king and sockeye salmon. The versatility of silver salmon means they can be caught using various techniques, whether it’s while flossing for sockeyes or back-trolling for kings.
The higher flow rates in the Kasilof and Kenai rivers during summer also make the entire river length accessible for fishing into October, offering extensive opportunities for anglers to engage in silver salmon fishing.
Kasilof River Silver Salmon Drift Boats & Technique
Fishing for silver salmon on the Kasilof is predominantly done from drift boats, employing techniques like bouncing salmon eggs or using sardine-wrapped plugs. This approach offers a serene and peaceful float, punctuated by the thrill of engaging with the aggressive Coho salmon. The experience is both relaxing and exhilarating, making for a memorable trip.
The drift boat experience on the Kasilof is unique, offering anglers the chance to closely engage with the environment. Targeting silver salmon just beneath the boat with cured salmon eggs provides a rush of excitement, especially when these magnificent fish strike the bait.
Fly fishing for silver salmon on the Kenai River is an equally thrilling experience. The challenge of catching Coho with fly gear adds to the excitement, and the beauty of the Kasilof River only enhances the overall experience.
